Palle Mikkelborg - Soundscape

Fredsskulptur 1995

Linien:

Peace Sculpture 1995

- A Laser sculpture "The Line - The Light" along the west coast of Denmark on 4 May 1995 from 22:00 to 24:00, celebrating 50 years of peace.
- A composition by Palle Mikkelborg, recorded with ca. 1000 Danish musicans, accompanying the laser sculpture on 4 May 1995.
- A number of exhibitions with 22 internationally known artists from all parts of the world will open on 5 May 1995.

The idea for this immense peace sculpture, "Line - Light", comes from the 36 year old Danish visual artist Elle-Mie Ejdrup Hansen, the background being a combination of two things: "The Light" - a 50 year old Danish tradition and "The Line" - a group buildings from history.

The Light:
On 4 May 1945 the announcement that WWII had ended reached Denmark via BBC. This message of peace gave rise to a spontaneous reaction from the Danish people; as a sign of joy for the newly-won peace and hope for the future, Danish people lit candles and placed them in their windows. This tradition has been honoured even to this day.

The Line:
The 530 km that comprise the Danish part of the Atlantic Wall (Hitler's fortification under WWII) stretch from the northern tip of Norway to the Spanish-French border. Along the Danish west coast alone lie the remnants of 6000 bunkers. Today these bunkers lie spread along the coast, knocked around by the waves; as irrational sculptural shapes, defenseless and marked by nature's forces. These bunkers are an echo from WWII and highlight the importance of peace.

SOUNDSCAPE

That's life!

SOUNDSCAPE
Original idea and composition Palle Mikkelborg

My vision - my wish - is that this "journey" that I am about to undertake to record many musicians will result in a "sound" from the final mix which touches the ear as the light touches the eye. My composition - Soundscape - is made up of four movements - four seasons - four themes which I have divided amongst all the artists taking part.

First movement
Second movement
Third movement
Fourth movement

Spring...
Summer...
Autumn...
Winter...

awakening/shining
peace/harmony
the sea /the power
hymns/prayers

The whole is introduced by a prologue, the theme of which is dedicated to Elle-Mie Ejdrup Hansen in thanks for her belief in me as the one to put sound to her extraordinary vision.

October/November 1994

A journey is over...
I am left with warm feelings of gratitude.
I have been on a journey that has taken me to all the named orchestras, groups and soloists.
Some are personal friends...
Some I see often...
Some I have not met for many years...
Some I have never met before, but know from their outstanding work...
If there is one little "blue" note it is simply that time put a limit on how many of those on my original "wish-list" it was possible to visit. Thatīs life! Reflections on the recorded material and the final mix must start.
But... everyone I met put their own very individual, golden stamp on my simple material and every visit was very special.
I send warm greetings and best wishes to all who took part, with deep thankfulness for all these experiences.

I was there... I listened... I recorded... I enjoyed!!

Men listen over medvirkende er alligevel forbløffende fyldig.

From August 1994 to the middle of March 1995 it was my job to contact orchestras, choirs, ensembles and soloists - across all walks of Danish music life - and to coordinate all the recordings.
The truth is that of course we did not have time to record everyone that we had wanted to, but the list of those who did participate is nevertheless remarkable. Never before have so many Danish musicians been drawn together in such a way around the recording of a new Danish work.
What I experienced during the entire process was the respect that Danish musicians had for the vision, and their wish to be a part of Palle Mikkelborg's Soundscape. I also experinced a great flexibility in coordination from all sides. Above all during the recordings, I constantly experienced a confirmation of the amazingly high professional standard of Danish musicians - and the joy with which they make music.
